Connect your school Gmail
If your school email runs on Google (you open it at mail.google.com), you connect it by signing in with Google. Like connecting a bank to a budgeting app: you sign in on Google's own page, and Gloss never sees your password.
Steps
- In Gloss, tap your school email on Connect your school (during setup) or in Settings.
- Gloss tells you that Claude, an AI made by Anthropic, reads your school email to find deadlines, and asks if that's OK. Tap Continue to agree. ("Not now" skips email; everything else still works.)
- Tap to sign in. Google's page opens. Pick your school account, not a personal one.
- Google lists what Gloss asks for: to view your email messages and settings. Tap Allow.
- You're back in Gloss. It starts reading the last 30 days (or since your term started) and pings you when it's done.
What Gloss can and can't do
- It can read email in your inbox to find deadlines, exam changes and events.
- It can't send, delete, move or change anything.
- It doesn't download attachments.
- Email about health, counseling, disability, Title IX, conduct, financial aid or the visa office is set aside and never sent to AI. Gloss finds it by matching words and senders, so it can miss one.
- The subject and text of each email are deleted from Gloss 30 days after it was read. Details.
If something goes wrong
- "Gmail connection opens soon": Google limits new apps to 100 students until its review finishes. What that means.
- "Your school needs to approve Gloss": here's what to do.
- "Allow" was unticked: if you don't allow reading email, Gloss can't connect. Try again and leave it ticked.
- Stopped connecting after you changed your school password: Google signs Gloss out when your password changes. Tap Reconnect on the red banner.
Disconnect
Settings, then your school email, then Disconnect. Gloss stops Gmail's new mail alerts, asks Google to remove its access, and deletes every email it stored, the deadlines and events it found only in that email, and the email's summaries. You can also remove Gloss at myaccount.google.com/permissions.
